Re.clima: Raízes launches methodology that connects justice, mitigation, and climate adaptation

By 25 de April de 2026News

As the climate crisis intensifies, marked by an increase in extreme events such as droughts, floods, and heat waves, there is a growing urgency for strategies that not only reduce emissions but also address the unequal impacts on different populations. In this context, Raízes Desenvolvimento Sustentável has just launched Re.clima, our proprietary methodology for Climate Justice, Mitigation, and Adaptation, designed to operate directly in local communities and alongside the most vulnerable populations.

The proposal is based on a key premise: the climate crisis is not merely environmental, but also social. Its effects disproportionately affect low-income populations, traditional communities, and, in particular, women, who face greater economic and social vulnerability in the face of climate change.

The climate crisis is already underway. And it does not affect everyone in the same way. If the climate crisis is unequal, the responses must be fair. Raízes developed this methodology to support these responses.

Justice, mitigation, and adaptation: three dimensions that go hand in hand

The methodology encompasses three dimensions that must work in tandem: addressing the root causes of the problem through climate mitigation; preparing communities for the impacts already underway through climate adaptation strategies; and ensuring that solutions are fair and inclusive, grounded in climate justice.

This integrated approach avoids isolated solutions that are not sustainable in the long term. At the same time, it enhances regions’ ability to respond to the climate crisis by linking practical action with structural transformation.

A methodology built on practical experience and active listening

Re.clima was developed through an internal process of technical refinement by the Raízes team, which established thematic committees to improve decision-making, monitor projects, and strengthen the organization’s governance.

As a result, an applied methodology was developed, organized into modules that can be implemented independently or integrated into projects already being carried out by the organization. This process is the result of fieldwork, community engagement, and a consistent track record of working on projects with socio-environmental impact.

From talk to action: how Re.clima takes shape in local communities

Among the key areas of focus are roundtable discussions to assess the impacts of the climate crisis in local communities, the development of nature-based local solutions—such as agroforestry and green drainage—and climate adaptation strategies tailored to the specific circumstances of each community.

The methodology also addresses climate justice from an intersectional perspective, taking into account gender, race, and territory, as well as everyday climate mitigation practices related to energy, mobility, and waste management. Throughout the process, the communities work with the Raízes team to develop an initial plan for risk reduction and climate adaptation based on local realities.

If you work on community-based projects, this type of approach can be the deciding factor in whether an initiative has a real impact or not.

The climate crisis is being tackled through collective action

More than just a methodology, Re.clima represents a stance. Addressing the climate crisis requires a systemic perspective, informed listening, and collective action. Without these elements, any solution risks exacerbating inequalities or failing in practice.

The climate crisis is already here. The question is how each project, company, or initiative chooses to respond to it.
