When we talk about transforming territories, we’re also talking about recognizing and valuing what already exists in them: the knowledge of traditional communities, the diversity of nature and the cultures that intertwine. In the most recent Raízes video, the topic is the importance of socio-biodiversity and how it guides our way of working with communities, organizations and territories throughout Brazil.
But what is socio-biodiversity anyway?
According to the Ministry of the Environment (MMA), socio-biodiversity is the set of interactions between biological diversity and the cultural diversity of traditional peoples and communities, who have historically conserved and managed natural resources in a sustainable way. In other words, it’s about recognizing local knowledge, ways of life and practices that contribute to environmental preservation and income generation.
At Raízes, this approach translates into projects that value nature-based solutions aimed at generating income for local productive groups. This is how we increase the positive socio-environmental impact of our clients and optimize the resources invested in the territories.
By connecting biodiversity, culture and development, socio-biodiversity ceases to be just a concept and becomes a transformative practice. A way of doing things differently, with purpose and belonging!
