Strengthening community-based tourism in Belém, the islands, and surrounding areas
Belém will host COP 2030 in 2025. The capital of Pará represents the best of Amazonian culture with its unique gastronomy, its own musical styles, its hospitable culture, its historical heritage, and, of course, the forest. However, Belém is still an underdeveloped city in terms of tourism due to historically low investment in this sector. In addition to new beds, sanitation, and transportation solutions, which we imagine will be the subject of investment in the coming months; this proposal seeks resources to strengthen small local receptive operators and the communities of the islands of Belém and its surroundings for community-based tourism.
The aim of this project is therefore to ensure that the small entrepreneurs already established in the capitals are supported and become competitive to take on the tourist offer generated by the event; and that visitation to communities is improved and expanded, always under the precepts and care of Community-Based Tourism.
Beliefs that motivated this project
- Ecotourism, if practiced according to its principles, contributes to the conservation of socio-biodiversity;
- Community-based tourism, whose premise is the autonomy and protagonism of local people, promotes the inclusion of minorities;
- Entrepreneurship can be a form of empowerment and autonomy for small businesses and communities;
- Responsible tourism can be a way of generating income and keeping the forest standing.
- Belém is an incredible city with a unique culture and the potential to become a major international benchmark in sustainable tourism.
Planned stages
To strengthen communities and community-based tourism businesses in Belém, the islands and the surrounding area, the main stages are:
- Selection of businesses and communities
- Business Incubation
- Strengthening communities
- Support for marketing and market access
- Monitoring of operators and recipient communities
