From menstrual dignity to female empowerment: how Dona do Meu Fluxo continues to pave the way

dignidade menstrual e empoderamento feminino

Talking about menstrual dignity means talking about basic rights, health, education, and, above all, the possibility of living everyday life to the fullest without barriers imposed by something natural to the body. It was with this perspective that the project Dona do Meu Fluxo was born, in 2017, from a partnership between the 2 Brazilian B Corp certified companies   Raízes Desenvolvimento Sustentável and Korui.

From the outset, the goal was ambitious: to tackle period poverty not only by distributing products, but also by promoting knowledge, autonomy, and new ways of relating to one’s own body. Over the years, this movement has grown stronger thanks to a network of volunteers who share experiences, welcome other women, and spread knowledge.
In the workshops, more than just the use of menstrual cups, they talk about self-esteem, health, sisterhood, and empowerment. Each meeting also becomes a space for exchange, where women build together ways to better deal with their flows—both menstrual and those of life.

Menstrual dignity as a right

With the passage of recent laws such as 14.214/2021, there has been progress in ensuring access to (conventional) menstrual products for low-income individuals.

Menstrual dignity, however, is still not a guaranteed reality for everyone. According to UNICEF, millions of girls and women in Brazil do not have regular access to hygiene items, adequate bathrooms, or even information about menstrual health. It is estimated that more than four million students attend schools without the minimum conditions for this care, and many families still face financial difficulties in securing basic sanitary pads.

These data points reveal deep inequalities, which are exacerbated in peripheral territories and traditional communities, where the lack of infrastructure directly compromises health and education.

It is against this backdrop that the Dona do Meu Fluxo project proves so relevant: it reframes menstrual dignity as a right, not a privilege.

Impact and stats that make a difference

Dona do Meu Fluxo was a pioneer in bringing menstrual poverty to the forefront of the debate in 2017 and remains active today, demonstrating the power of an initiative that was born to transform. Along the way, more than 6,300 women have benefited from workshops and donations in different regions of Brazil. More than 100 workshops have been held, always led by volunteers who bring information, care, and exchange experiences to each meeting.
The use of menstrual cups has also become a symbol of this intimate revolution: in addition to reducing ongoing expenses with disposable pads, it promotes autonomy, reduces environmental impact, and allows each woman to establish a healthier and more respectful relationship with her body. By democratizing access to this resource, the project broadens horizons and generates an impact that goes far beyond the menstrual cycle.

How the project is organized and grows

The project is simple and powerful. Any woman can sign up to be a volunteer, participate in training sessions, and be called upon to take action in her local area.

If you are interested, you can register yourself as a volunteer.

Collectives and organizations that wish to host workshops can also register, offering in return the physical space and mobilization of women in the community. The workshop is confirmed if there is a volunteer available in the region or when there is support for travel. This has been the case in several partnerships that have already been established. Some become recurring partners, such as Casa do Rio, Amazone-se and Route Brasil, who trained volunteers internally so that more women could be reached.

New partnership requests can be made through this form!

This logistic support may also be extended toward companies.  Partnerships with Organizations such as Natura, Pinheiro Neto and Paraná Banco enabled workshops in remote regions or urban peripheries where these companies operate, covering transportation and accommodation costs so that their target audience could attend the workshops. This invitation remains open: companies wishing to join this cause can contact us by email at: [email protected].

Today, Dona do Meu Fluxo brings together transformative stories and opens horizons for thousands of women. We recently held a workshop on Financial Flows for volunteers. More than just providing a practical solution for menstrual dignity, the project works for collective empowerment, breaking taboos, and building a future of freedom for all. Because dealing well with your own flow is just the beginning: the real impact lies in creating possibilities for every woman to live her life cycles with choices, respect, and dignity.
