The new free streaming service, Maricá Filmes, is winning over movie lovers with an accessible and diverse proposal. Available throughout Brazil, the platform positions itself as a cultural alternative, valuing independent productions and offering the public a varied catalog, ranging from short films to feature films of different genres. Raízes was part of a documentary on the solidarity economy that is now available on streaming!
The initiative is a technological commission from the Maricá Institute of Science, Technology, and Innovation (ICTIM) in partnership with the Department of Culture. The big difference is that anyone can access this content for free, with just a simple registration to start enjoying national productions and some international cinema classics. The app has a catalog of attractions, which is available for Android and IOS systems and can be accessed online.
Raízes talks about the solidarity economy
One of the productions already available on the platform is the documentary series Planeta Solidário, directed by Renato Tapajós and Julio Matos, made up of 13 episodes of 26 minutes each, which deal with the solidarity economy. Launched in 2021, each chapter explores essential themes to reflect on new forms of production and social organization, presenting successful experiences, innovative public policies, and management strategies that break away from the traditional capitalist model.
Mariana Madureira, founder and director of Raízes SD, presented an episode entitled “Community-based Tourism: defending Territory, Identity, and Nature as a Strategy of resistance”. In it, Mariana delves into the experience of Rede Tucum, in Ceará, to show how community-based tourism has emerged as an alternative to conventional tourism. The proposal is to meet the needs of local communities, respecting their cultures and preserving their territories.
This model of tourism is also a strategy of resistance, strengthening the identity and autonomy of communities, as well as stimulating local economic development. It’s one of the fronts we work on here at Raízes, and to find out more about it, just click here.
Worth checking out: other streaming works
In addition to offering a varied selection of independent productions and content focused on social issues, Maricá Filmes also stands out for including award-winning and world-renowned works in its catalog.
One of the great classics available is the film “Voyage to the Moon” (Le Voyage dans la Lune, 1902) by Georges Méliès, which marked the history of cinema as one of the first science fiction films. The classic was considered lost for years until a color copy of the film was restored in 2011.
There’s also the feature film “Antes de Falar de Amor” by director Sarah Tavares, which won over critics and audiences with its sensitive approach to the complexities of human relationships. The film won several national and international awards.
In the field of documentaries, the powerful “Ava Kuña, Aty Kuña – Indigenous Woman, Political Woman” brings to light the struggle of indigenous women against patriarchy, racism, and the rise of transnational capital. The documentary won an award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) for Best Social Impact Documentary, as well as an honorable mention at the Buenos Aires Human Rights Festival. The work is a tribute to Indigenous activism and the strength of women fighting for justice and equity.
For these reasons and others, here’s our tip to marathon it whenever possible!
